The FreeHand 5.5 Demo can be installed directly from the Macromedia Showcase CD. Double-click the Installer and choose a destination on your hard disk.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
FreeHand no longer supports System 6, so we recommend you upgrade to System 7.0 or later.
PREFERENCES
The FreeHand Preferences file is located in the Preferences folder in your Macintosh System Folder. To use the default preferences, simply delete the Preferences file and launch FreeHand.
INSTALLING PLUG-INS
FreeHand 5.5 installs an Xtras folder in the FreeHand folder (FreeHand Xtras folder) and one in the Macromedia folder (Macromedia Xtras folder) within your System Folder. Place all Photoshop-compatible third-party plug-ins in the Macromedia Xtras folder.
As with previous versions of FreeHand, if you plan to make use of Illustrator™ Plug-Ins or third-party Xtras written for FreeHand, place them directly in the FreeHand Xtras folder, or simply make an alias of the respective plug-in folder and place it in the FreeHand Xtras folder.
Refer to Chapter 10, “Xtras,” in the FreeHand User Manual for information on how to use Xtras. Refer to the documentation that came with your third-party plug-ins for information on how to use those plug-ins.
Be sure to watch for the development of more Xtras that add functionality to FreeHand 5.5.
PHOTOSHOP™ PLUG-IN COMPATIBILITY
If you are a current Photoshop user and you wish to use Photoshop Plug-ins within FreeHand, we recommend that you upgrade to Photoshop 3.0.4 or later. Most of the plug-ins that accompany previous versions of Photoshop use undocumented Photoshop features that FreeHand cannot replicate. Therefore, those plug-ins that depend upon this undocumented Photoshop architecture do not work inside FreeHand. However, the majority of Photoshop-compatible plug-ins are created by third parties, who cannot use these undocumented features either. Almost all of the most popular Photoshop-compatible plug-ins, like Kai’s Power Tools and Gallery Effects, do work inside FreeHand.
Some third-party plug-ins may crash or fail to operate in FreeHand. For example, some 680X0 plug-ins will not work in FreeHand if they assume the presence of a floating-point unit and you are using a 680X0 Macintosh that does not have a floating-point unit, or if you are using a Power Macintosh. This is a problem in those specific plug-ins and is not something FreeHand can rectify. Such plug-ins will also fail to operate in Photoshop.
DISABLING INCOMPATIBLE PHOTOSHOP™ PLUG-INS
If you wish to prevent the Photoshop Filters Xtra or Photoshop Readers Xtra from loading specific plug-ins, add the names of those plug-ins, one per line, to the file “Disabled Plug-ins” in the Macromedia Xtras folder in your System Folder. The FreeHand 5.5 Installer creates a version of this file, which already contains the names of plug-ins that are known not to work with FreeHand. To re-enable loading of a particular plug-in, remove its name from that file and re-launch FreeHand.
When entering the name of a Photoshop plug-in, note that you must use the name of the actual function as it appears in the FreeHand Xtras menu after the word “[TIFF].” For example, although “[TIFF] KPT 2.1 Glass Lens Normal” appears in the FreeHand Xtras menu, enter only “KPT 2.1 Glass Lens Normal” in the “Disabled Plug-ins” file to disable this function.
APPLYING ALIGNMENT TO AUTO-EXPANDING TEXT CONTAINERS
Now you can apply right, center or force-justified alignments to auto-expanding text containers.
IMPORTING MICROSOFT® WORD RTF FILES
FreeHand 5.5 now imports RTF files created in Microsoft Word 6.0. Furthermore, you can copy formatted text in Word 6.0 and paste it into FreeHand 5.5.
ADOBE TYPE MANAGER
If you are using ATM 3.0 or earlier, you may get incorrect “error” messages when converting text to paths. Upgrading to ATM 3.5 or later will correct this problem.
LINOTRONIC IMAGESETTERS
FreeHand 5.5 may show the following PostScript errors when used with a Linotronic Imagesetter:
“%%invalid access [offending command: put] for postscript level 1 Rips” or
“%%invalid access [offending command: findfont] for postscript level 2 Rips.”
To fix this, re-download all the fonts to the RIP’s hard drive using Linotronic Font Downloader 2.5.4 or later. You only have to do this once. Be sure to use the TIME button instead of SPACE.
